Moskowitz Bayse is pleased to announce New Relief, an exhibition of works by Los Angeles-based artist Anthony Miserendino. New Relief, the artist’s first solo presentation in Los Angeles, also marks the gallery’s inaugural exhibition in its Hollywood space. An opening reception will be held September 19th from 6-8 PM. The works will be on view through October 31, 2015.
Most recently working in sculpture, specifically relief, Anthony Miserendino creates objects that examine the tension between form and image. Each sculpture endures the manipulation of space in a constant push and pull with chance and intention, heightening the inextricable engagement between material and meaning.
The works in New Relief introduce Miserendino’s practice as one that is as conceptually rigorous as it is technically proficient. Deeply informed by classical antiquity, each of his sculptures begins with a scale drawing of his subject. The drawing is then folded, draped, or otherwise shaped to serve as a model, from which the artist creates a first iteration of relief in clay.
The clay materially accepts the raising and lowering of the physical plane, in addition to recording the artist’s own incidental impressions. From the clay he makes a mold, and then a cast of the mold. Often, the casts are reworked, remolded, and recast several times before the casting of a finished sculpture allowing for many levels of self-correction.
Through this contemplative working and reworking, the artist allows for the modification of intention and meaning in process. As a result, sculpture and subject are unified like relief, as a medium, embodies the connection of a figure to its context.
Anthony Miserendino (b. 1985) lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2014.
