C. Feign Jr. proudly presents “Somewhere Between,” a solo exhibition of new paintings and photographs by Los Angeles Based artist Kim Kei. An opening reception for the artist will take place at Bustamante Gill Gallery on Saturday, September 13th, at 6PM. The exhibition will run through November 1st, with regular gallery hours Wed – Sat 12:30 – 5:00 PM, or by appointment. Bustamante Gill Gallery is located at 2675 S La Cienega Blvd, Culver City CA. This exhibition marks Kei’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles.

The works in “Somewhere Between” demonstrate Kei’s profound interest in the act of art making as a kind of long form visual meditation. The source imagery in Kei’s studies are culled from ephemeral bits of fabric, cloth, and soft rococo that she adheres together to create intimate, vibrant sculpture. From these little assemblies, Kei uses multiple cameras to capture 400+ images that she will later composite to begin her photographic and painted works.

Kei simultaneously clarifies and obscures her intentions through dramatic shifts in scale, palette, and perspective. In equal parts technical perfection and material serendipity, Kei melds an abstract-figurative approach to Baroque lighting and highly attenuated color sensibility. Her unnamable compositions reference realism in the details, while omitting the more familiar landmarks of figure as form; surprisingly, it is in this absence that the body is implied. Kei leaves ample space to inject a tense mist over the form’s physiology, as though the viewer were being exposed to the anatomy of a highly personal, imperfect memory.
