Rash Chambers: A Two Person Exhibition

JAUS is very pleased to present Rash Chambers: A Two Person Exhibition featuring new works by artists Alison Rash and Brian Chambers. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 26th from 6:30-9:30. The works will be on view through August 2, 2015.

I initially approached Rash and Chambers, two artists who were previously unaware of each other’s work, to exhibit together, because I was intrigued by how both create non-representational paintings that combine geometric shapes and textured yet very flat surfaces with a great deal of sensitivity towards both medium and composition.  I was also curious and excited to see how Rash’s vibrant Flashe and acrylic on YUPO paintings would look next to Chambers’ monochromatic graphite and RSG gesso panels.

What I discovered after further dialogue with the artists was the fact that both Rash and Chambers see their work as a site for the integration and negotiation of seemingly opposing, dialectical forces.  Rash mentions word pairings such as “compulsive vs. impulsive” in relation to mark-making, and sees her work as an intersection between “order, coincidence and manipulation”.  Chambers sees his work as a place floating between “interior and exterior”, “high and low”, “near and far”, where singular viewpoints collapse.  Both artists allow chance, and their at times unpredictable processes interact with the structured geometry of their compositions.

Furthermore, Rash sees her work as an “exploration of absence” while Chambers sees his work as an “exploration of space” – ideas that, while not synonymous, definitely allude to each other.  Although these similarities may be quite generalizable to any number of contemporary painters, my affinity to these two artists’ works, and my desire to see them in the context of a two person show is based on intuition, which ultimately may operate on a much more specific and meaningful level than any verbal description can offer.

Alison Rash is a Los Angeles based artist who grew up in rural Nebraska.  Rash earned an MFA from Claremont Graduate University with a concentration in Painting, an MA in Education from Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology and a BA in Art from Pepperdine University.

Brian Chambers is an artist living and working in Los Angeles, and was raised in San Diego, CA.  He received his BA in the Department of Fine Art at UCLA.  Recent exhibitions include ‘Impermanence’ at the Brand gallery, ‘Transit’ at the Santa Ana Gallery and ‘Freeway Studies’ at the Ben Maltz Gallery.
