It Looks So Real is a 40 year tour of Los Angeles through the lens of native son Robert Landau. Although he travels the world shooting on assignment, Robert always comes back to his first love, The City of Angels — focusing his camera on the distinct, fleeting and sometimes iconic visual facets of the city and its streets. The images in the exhibition are grounded in the classic style of European street photographers who pioneered the genre, but Landau’s work carries street photography into the modern era and is equally influenced by the nature of Los Angeles itself — a city like no other.

“While the influences of Landau’s predecessors, such as Eugene Atget, Andre Kertesz, and Elliott Erwitt are easily recognized, Robert’s unique perspective and use of color captures LA as the city truly is, bright, loud and screaming for attention,” explains Anne Martin, FATHOM Gallery Director.

“So many of the things I’m drawn to photograph, here in LA, were meant to be viewed through the windshield of a car driving by, and designed to somehow get the driver’s attention — which is what makes this city so unique compared to old world cities like Paris, for instance,” said Robert Landau.
