Christopher Grimes Gallery is pleased announce Eclipse, here and now an exhibition of new work by Gianfranco Foschino. This will be his first solo exhibition in the United States and his first with the gallery. An opening reception will be held Saturday, October 31st from 4-6 PM.
Foschino’s videos confront our perceived distinctions between multiple genres including photography, painting and video. For this exhibition he will present a series of landscapes captured from Easter Island and locations in Southern Chile. The South Gallery will feature surveillance footage recorded in São Paulo. While the content and implications of these two bodies of works is widely different, the technique is the same: in all cases, Foschino sets up a fixed camera and captures the subtle movement that occurs in front of the lens. There is no editing, no interference on his part. Filmed from a distance, the scene increases in intensity as the minutes pass by with no sign of the narrative, which has become increasingly prevalent in video. Referring to historical precedents of early video art where the emphasis was on documentary and time, Foschino’s works engender us to pause and be present, to unplug and reconnect with our senses.
Gianfranco Foschino (b. 1983 in Santiago, Chile) lives and works in Santiago. His work was included in SITE Santa Fe’s Biennial, Unsettled Landscapes, and he was recently commissioned to create new work for the Chilean Pavilion in the 14th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. His work is in the collections of the Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York; Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul, Turkey; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach; and National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
