haleARTS is pleased to present The Fifth Annual Pulp group show featuring the work of Lauren Mendelsohn-Bass, Eddie Mickenberg and Stephanie Sydney. An opening reception will be held Friday, October 14th from 5-8 PM. The works will be on view and for sale through October 26th, 2016.
Lauren Mendelsohn-Bass is a Los Angeles born painter who received her Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her work depicts the psychology of the mind’s inner conflicts and struggles, portrayed through her figures’ outward appearance and gestures. She often emphasizes the psychological drama with a monochromatic, Film Noir feel in order to examine what makes us tick. Her large, figurative paintings have a climactic, narrative quality with a focus upon emotional suspense, with each glance suggesting a passion or crime.
Eddie Mickenberg is an artist who is drawn to the marriage of minimalistic and bold elements. Eddie has a history working with oils in his paintings, but doesn’t shy away from mixing in different textures of paint for his artwork. His love for contemporary art carries through interpretations of songs, people, or images, then he slightly tailors the inspiration to make it his own version. In this particular piece, his interpretation of the song “High by the Beach” by Lana Del Rey, played a part in his vision to capture a regal contemporary figure for this oil and acrylic painting.
Stephanie Sydney – “Trained as a painter, I use my own photographs and technology to compose my images. I am frequently drawn to capture fleeting moments that pass in a flash as we rush around the city, to see things most people pay no head to. Some of my images are single photographs, some are digital collages. My work deals with creating a dialogue between extremes and hopes to address the fragility of life on this planet. I am fascinated by the cycles of life: birth, aging, and death that apply to all and the relationships we have with our environment and the transient nature of all phenomenon. You could say I paint with photographs.”
