Javiera Estrada: Pillars of Creation & In the Bedroom

Boîte Noire Gallery and 4 Art Management are pleased to present a special exhibition featuring two new bodies of work by Javiera Estrada entitled: Pillars of Creation and In the Bedroom. An opening reception will be held at the Pacific Design Center (Space B222) Thursday, September 17th from 5-9:30 PM. The works will be on view through November 6th, 2015.

Pillars of Creation is a photograph of the interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula some 7,000 light years from Earth. It is a place where stars are born and simultaneously eroding by the light of nearby stars.  Almost every element of earth was formed at the heart of a star.  Our bodies are remnants from the bursting of these beautiful crystals of light. Javiera Estrada’s fascination and study of astrology, metaphysics and quantum physics has been influential in her life and her creative process. This new series is an exploration of consciousness and the ever expanding world of the universe within.  Magical worlds are created through the explosions of ink in water. Through the negative space, vibrant textures emerge organically. Similar to life, each image is a mystery unfolding, only to be revealed in the present moment. According to the artist: “Like the empty space in the galaxy, I’ve been dying and rebirthing out of darkness into the light of new beginnings”.

In the Bedroom, is an intimate perspective of the space between the subconscious dreamworld and fantasy.  Portrayed through the feminine archetype, this personal journey is a kaleidoscopic explosion of color and imagination interwoven and juxtaposed in the stillness of the environment.

The creative process of In The Bedroom is a unique multi-layered technique producing an original one of a kind piece.  All photographs are shot on film with the use of a medium format camera. The image is then printed and displayed in view for the collage to take form. The “dream”  is revealed through the patience of time and the collection of imagery. Vintage and modern illustrations are layered between acrylic sheets, arranged and re-arranged multitudinously until the finality of the piece is revealed. This subliminal expedition can take anywhere from a few days up to a few months. Occasionally due to the anomaly of dreams, the absence of vision leaves a frame void of all imagination. The artistic intention derives not from cerebral contemplation but from the undercurrent of a sentimental world.
