In the 1950’s infamous art critic Clement Greenberg introduced Helen Frankenthaler to the New York School of artists, such as Jackson Pollock and Williem De Kooning. Extremely talented but much younger than this group, Frankenthaler went on to become one of the most prominent artists in the second generation of abstract expressionism.

David Hockney is one of the best-known portrait artists working today. Hockney prefers to paint his friends as opposed to commission portraits. Celia has been Hockney’s friend and muse since the 1960’s. She is a popular textile designer and fabric maker. An overview of his portraits from the 1970’s and 1980’s shows Hockney’s interest in portraying his friend Celia over time.
