The Critical Eye by Phil Tarley

The Annenberg Community Beach House presents “Detailed: Nine Street Photographers”. The exhibition will run from November 15, 2016 through February 20, 2017. An Opening Night Reception will be held on November 15th 6:30 -8:30 pm.

The Annenberg name, long associated with the staging of important photographic exhibitions in Century City has a second photographic venue on the beach, in Santa Monica.  The Detailed Exhibition, features work by nine Los Angeles (native and non-native) photographers.  The artists represented in this show are Mark Indig, Debe Arlook, Cindy Bendat, Ann Mitchell, Peter Bennett, Maureen Haldeman, Dianne Cockerill, Larry Brownstein and Lawrence D’Attilio.

Curated and organized by Mark Indig, Details is an example and a photographic examination  of this ever-changing city and region. Often obsessed by details, marks and captured moments, photographers often do their deepest and most contemplative work close to home. Saturated lifeguard towers, power lines, closed storefronts, abstractions of a marked landscape, architectural landmarks, intimacies from ethnic celebrations and street life — these are all a part of what makes L.A. a vibrant and special space to record. This exhibition seeks the connection between the details in the photographer’s mind and the details of the unique cityscape that is Los Angeles.

The Annenberg Community Beach House at Santa Monica State Beach is owned by the State of California and operated by the City of Santa Monica. The Beach House is made possible by a generous gift from the Annenberg Foundation, at the direction of Wallis Annenberg, and in partnership with the City of Santa Monica and California State Parks.
