Haunting, demonic, deliciously devilish, with a quietly understated eroticism… Lori Pond’s Bosch Redux homages the unprecedented imagination of Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch. Pond whimsically folds her masterful photographic technique into Bosch’s limitless imagination. Strange intricate details cascade from Pond’s exotic vision, inspired by her muse. The artists hones in on the essences that occupy the backgrounds of Bosch’s works. She embellishes from these Boschian themes to concoct her own Bosch-based phantasmagorical photographic fantasies.
Pond uses friends as models, and hires prop makers, prosthetic designers, and makeup and wardrobe artists to marshal her vision to help create small tableaux that are inspired from the painter’s oeuvre, mostly from his masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights. The artist traveled to Holland last year to see his entire collection displayed in the Bosch 500 festival. She came to the realization that Bosch’s work is all a morality play; his works address concepts of good and evil, and what happens to humans when they sin. Pond’s photographs are numinous recreations of the old master’s which are both delightful and disturbing at the same time.
